From Technician to Leader:

How Jesus Frees Us from Imposter Syndrome
We’ve all seen it happen, or perhaps we’ve lived it. A brilliant technician, a master of their craft, gets promoted into leadership. They earned the role because they were fantastic at doing the work.

But once they step into management, a strange thing happens. Instead of stepping back to guide, mentor, and upskill their team, they dive right back into the weeds. They keep doing the work themselves.

Why? Because it’s comfortable. Because their confidence is tied to their technical identity.

But beneath the surface, there is often a quieter, deeper struggle: Imposter Syndrome. The nagging fear that says, “You aren’t actually a leader. You’re just a technician pretending to be one.”
The Trap of the “Technician” Mentality
When we lack personal confidence in our identity as leaders, we default to what we know. We micro, manage, we hoard tasks, and we burn out. Worst of all, we fail our teams.

The True Role of a Leader: Your job is no longer just to get things done, it is to invest in people so they can get things done.

When people feel genuinely invested in, a powerful psychological shift occurs. They feel valued, and they naturally want to invest back into the mission. But you cannot invest in others if you are too busy frantically protecting your own reputation as the “expert.”
How Jesus Shatters the Imposter Identity

If you are leading from a place of insecurity, the gospel offers a radical breakout strategy. Jesus frees us from being an imposter. He doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. When you realize that God has placed you in this position, the pressure to “fake it until you make it” completely evaporates.

  • He shifts our status from “achiever” to “child of God.” An imposter feels they must perform to belong. But in Christ, your belonging is already secure. You don’t have to prove you deserve the leadership table.
  • He redefines greatness as service. The world thinks leadership is about prestige and having all the answers. Jesus showed us that leadership is about empowering others.

A New Assignment: A Different Class
Here is the turning point every faith, driven leader must face: Jesus knows you know how to do the job. He already watched you master the technical work. You don’t need to prove it to Him, and you don’t need to keep proving it to yourself.

Now, Jesus wants you to take that confidence you have in your own abilities and transfer that confidence into others, according to their ability.
We remain students for life, but as a leader, God has called you and I to a different class.

It is time to stop going back to the basics. Stop retreating to the comfort zone of doing the task yourself just because it makes you feel secure. Your assignment has changed. Step up, step into your true identity, and start developing others.

Reflection Question for the Comments:
What is one technical task you are holding onto today that you need to confidently hand over and teach to someone else?
