From Rome to Optic Fibre

We live in a world that often feels like it is unravelling at the seams. Every time we look at a screen, we are met with political hostility, ideological chaos, and deep division. The modern noise can be overwhelming, leaving many of us wondering where truth, peace, and divine purpose fit into a society driven by anger and engagement metrics.

But history has a way of reminding us that nothing happening today is entirely new—and that God has always worked through the very systems built by human ambition.

The Empire and the Obscure Place

To understand where we are today, it helps to look back roughly two thousand years.

At the height of its power, the Roman Empire was obsessed with expansion, control, and political dominance. Rome constructed over 50,000 miles of paved roads—a monumental feat of engineering designed to march legions, collect taxes, and project imperial power to the edge of the known world.

Yet, while Rome was flexing its mighty political machine, God was doing something entirely quiet and revolutionary in an obscure, overlooked corner of Galilee.

There were no grand parades or political appointments. Instead, Jesus handpicked a small group of ordinary people: fishermen, tax collectors, outcast women, and the broken and lost. In the shadows of an empire driven by power, He birthed a kingdom built on love, grace, and redemption.

Then came the divine irony: The very roads built for Rome’s unquenchable lust for power became the highways for the Good News.

The early believers traveled those imperial roads to spread a message that ultimately transformed the heart of the empire itself. What was built for human domination was hijacked by divine purpose.

The Modern Highway: The Digital Landscape

Today, our highways aren’t made of stone; they are built of fiber-optic cables, code, and data streams.

The internet, social media networks, and complex algorithms were primarily designed for profit, data collection, political leverage, and capturing our endless attention. On the surface, these digital spaces often seem to amplify our worst instincts—driving division, religious fever, and ideological strife at every turn.

It is easy to look at the digital world and feel a sense of despair. But just as God was at work in the far reaches of the Roman Empire, He is at work today.

The internet is now the new road system. Through these digital pathways, the message of hope, healing, and faith is reaching the most remote and obscure places on the planet. In places where physical churches cannot exist or where people feel completely isolated, a simple screen can deliver a message of encouragement, an ancient scripture, or a community of believers.

A Message for Today: God is in Control

It can feel like human madness and complex systems are running the world, but history shows us a different story. Human systems may build the infrastructure for power and profit, but they do not control the ultimate narrative.

God is not intimidated by the noise, the division, or the code. In a world driven by metrics and trends, the timeless truth remains: God controls the algorithm.

No matter how chaotic the digital empire becomes, light still finds a way through the network—reaching the broken, the searching, and the lost, right where they are.
